Warning Symptoms we need to approach

Do you feel dizzy going up or down escalators and elevators? Are you clumsy and often bump into things? Do you feel tired and listless? Is your memory fading and sometimes feel confused? Do you have pain in the ears when flying?
These are all signs of vertigo and dizziness and can be dealt with using natural medicine.
These two symptoms are not diseases in themselves, however are the body’s way of letting you know that there is something far more sinister going on that is out of balance…so to speak!
These hard to live with symptoms are reflective therefore of an organ system or structural problem that needs attending to. Doctors seem to struggle treating this condition, however Naturopaths treat it easily as they take a holistic approach, which is what is needed here. In the long run medications such as Antivert, Reglan, Phenergen or Valium only make the condition worse and can have harmful side effects.
Vertigo can be intense. Many people suffer from vertigo. It is really a symptom where you will feel like the room is spinning around you, or that you feel like you have ‘travel sickness’ after driving or being on a boat.
It feels like you and/or the room is either going up and down or side to side and it’s not a pleasant feeling and then it feels like you’ve lost your balance. When in fact you have.
Dizziness is fairly common and more like lightheadedness and less intense than vertigo but it could lead to fainting if left unchecked.

Causes of Dizziness and Vertigo

  • Blockage of the Eustachian tube behind the inner ear – this could be due to an infection (past or present) or inflammation or a structural anomaly in the area
  • Low blood pressure – (hypotension) AND High blood pressure – (hypertension)
  • Meniers Disease – causing fluid to build up in the inner ear
  • Anaemia – low iron levels
  • Medications – many have this effect – it often goes away when patients are weaned off certain medications
  • Allergies – commonly wheat / dairy
  • Low blood sugar – hypoglycaemia
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Colds / Flu / Sinusitis / other upper respiratory tract infections
  • Atherosclerosis – narrowing of the arteries
  • Viral infections
  • Caffeine overdose – more than 4 cups daily
  • Acoustic neuroma – a tumour found growing around the nerve that leads from the brain to the ear
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning from pollution causing nerve damage
  • Smoking
  • Dehydration
  • Migraines

The Eustachian tube (ear canal)

This is the most important area to check first. It is the ‘inner middle ear’ known as the auditory tube. This is why many people also suffer from tinnitus or ringing in the ears on top of the dizziness or vertigo.
This Eustachian Tube connects the nose and throat pathway to the ear. This is our first line of defence for our immune system.
The tube is approximately 3.5 cm long and 3mm wide and it controls air pressure between outside air and internal air by opening and closing. Pressure differences cause some hearing loss by a malfunctioning tympanic membrane and the bony or cartlidge part of the ear. Yawning, swallowing or chewing can help clear the tube and exercise the muscles around the area.
The Eustachian tube is also responsible for draining trapped mucus eg from upper respiratory tract infections.
Some people are born with a dysfunctional abnormality of the Eustachian tube (sometimes it may have happened at birth – ‘retained birth compression’.
Whatever the cause, the Eustachian tube needs to be checked.

Treatment of Dizziness and Vertigo

Establish the cause (see above) and treat using herbal medicine.
A herbal formula with different medicinal herbs should have the following actions eg
  • Antiviral
  • Antibacterial
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Immune stimulating
  • Mucus membrane strengthening and toning
  • Nerve repair

Ear Candling and Vertigo and Dizziness

Ear candling is also another gentle way to clear excess mucus, wax and other impurities from the ear canal. It has been around for centuries.
This traditional therapy originated in Ancient Greece however was also used in ancient China, Egypt and by the American Indians.
Ear candling usually takes about 45 minutes to do both ears and can be done at home or at your Naturopath’s clinic. It is painless and quite relaxing because you are lying down whilst it is working. The best part is seeing the outcome ie the accumulation of wax on the inside of the candles. Better out than in, I say!
Dizziness and vertigo is quite common, however, it is not normal and definitely not healthy.
It needs to be addressed as soon as possible. It can affect a persons lifestyle, hearing and general bodily balance and therefore can be quite dangerous if driving or out in public areas.
Lots can be done. It is not always a fast fix, depending on the cause, but it can be successfully treated naturally and you can look forward to clear hearing, thinking and breathing…without the dizziness.
