Traditional Uses:
Withania somnifera (Withania)
Contains alkaloids, saponins, steroidal lactones and withanolides (rich in iron). A tonic, adaptogen, nerving sedative, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour (in high doses). Withania is an important tonic because rather than being over-stimulating, Withania has a sedative aspect. Therefore very good for people who are “stressed-out”. Indicated for nervous exhaustion from stress and convalescence after acute illness or extreme stress. Also good for impotence due to devitalisation.
Passiflora incarnata (Passionflower)
Contains alkaloids (including harming, harman, Harmon, passiflorine): flavonoids; sterols. A relaxing antispasmodic with some sedative properties; a peripheral vasodilator. Excellent for restless legs, restlessness and irritability or visceral tension or spasm.
Scutellaria laterifolia (Skullcap)
A central nervous system relaxant and restorative; antispasmodic for nervous tension; to neurological and neuromotor conditions including epilepsy, helping to reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms; to states of nervous exhaustion and debility.
Matricaria Chamomilla (Chamomile)
The flowers are noted for their relaxant properties, calming restlessness and tensions, particularly as they affect the viscera such as the digestive tract; anti-inflammatory, reducing the amount of allergic responses; also in fever management; nervous bowel; calming without depressing; calms period pains and menopausal tensions.
Humulus lupulus (Hops)
Contains volatile oil and bitter-resin complex, condensed tannins, oestrogen substances, asparagus. Acts as a sedative, visceral antispasmodic, bitter digestive tonic; reduces symptoms of nervous tension.
Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licquorice)
Contains glycoside, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, bitter, volatile oil, oestrogenous substances, asparagus, coumarins, tannins; acts on the adrenals as a tonic and anti-inflammatory effects to hydrocortisone; protects the stomach wall and reduces gastric acid secretion; for gastric ulcers and adrenal stress and depression; a systemic anti-inflammatory also useful for respiratory distress.
